Amblyseius swirskii
Amblyseius swirskii
Type
Predatory mite (generalist)
Target pests
- Thrips (larvae suppression)
- Whitefly (egg/young stages)
- Broad Mite (suppression)
Best conditions
- Performs well in warm protected crops
- Works best preventatively or early in infestations
Use in crops
Notes
Swirskii is a foundational preventative predator in many commercial greenhouse IPM programmes. Often introduced early and supported with top-ups as pest pressure changes.
Related principles
IPM positioning
Preventative multi-pest predator for thrips, whitefly and broad mite; strong establishment species.
Best deployment strategy
- Introduce early as a preventative predator where thrips/whitefly/broad mite risk is expected.
- Aim for even distribution and continuity (top-ups during rapid growth or high pressure).
- Combine with parasitoids (e.g. for whitefly) for layered control.
Compatibility notes
- Works well with: Encarsia Formosa / Eretmocerus Eremicus (parasitoids) for layered whitefly control.
- Works well with: Orius Laevigatus / Orius Majusculus for thrips programmes.
Environmental preferences
- Strong performer in warmer conditions; establishment improves with warmth.
- Can struggle if conditions are consistently cool.
- Performs best with stable climate and availability of prey/alternative food.
